Texas Notaries - Regulatory Change for Digital Certificate
Important Update for Texas Notaries: The state of Texas now wants all Remote Notaries to have their own individual digital certificates.
SIGNiX has always hosted your digital certificate to save you money, to eliminate the inconvenience of installing a certificate on your computer, and to enhance security.
Unfortunately, the language regarding digital certificates and how they are used in the Texas RON law has now been re-interpreted by the Texas Secretary of State’s office to require that each Texas notary have an individual digital certificate that must be installed separately on your computer.
We have had considerable communication in person and via email with the SOS’s office over the last several months and provided a strong argument for the legal compliance of our approach and the multiple benefits to our RON notaries.
The Texas SOS rejected our arguments. Their interpretation of the law and resulting changes in the regulatory language and validation process will require you to purchase and install an individual digital certificate by July 27, which is the date that our existing digital certificate will be renewed this year, 2025.
Notaries who have already begun using an individual digital certificate in SIGNiX will not be affected by this change.
Step One - Purchase a Digital Certificate
Although there are a number of providers for digital certificates, we strongly recommend Identrust, and you can purchase a certificate directly here from our partnership page.
The price is $85 for one year, with discounts for two or three year certificates. Keep in mind that Texas wants to be alerted every time the certificate is renewed.
Step Two - Install Your Certificate
Once you have purchased your certificate, you will have to retrieve it first and then install it on your computer. Instructions can be found below.
IMPORTANT: This process is currently only compatible with Windows computers.
Those with an Apple computer, such as a MacBook, will not be able to upload their certificate into SIGNiX at this time. We hope to have this addressed in the future.

Step Three - Import Your Certificate to SIGNiX
After you have installed the IdenTrust certificate, import it to your SIGNiX eNotary Profile .
Now, you are able to complete your Texas Statement of Officer document.
Follow the steps in the following article to complete the TX SOO document - How to Complete the TX Statement of Officer.
Once all of that is complete, you can visit the Texas Secretary of State website to update your RON certificate with the state directly.
